Emil Guillermo: Do Asian American lives really matter?

My cousin Stephen, an immigrant who had naturalized as an American, a proud Asian American of Filipino descent,  was shot and killed a year ago.

So far, the family has seen no medical examiner’s report.

No police report.

Maybe none of it ever happened?

Do Asian American lives matter?

The family has been waiting for justice.

But it seems like all we are doing is waiting for paperwork.

Emil Guillermo: Why all mothers deserve flowers on this day.

flowerformomsday

My mother is no longer with us,  but it’s hard not to see her in every flower I see.

Is there a better gift than flowers on Mother’s Day?

It’s not the lazy man’s  gift of last resort.

And flowers don’t have to be expensive.  Pick the first one you see on the way to her today.

Tell your mom you were attracted to it and mesmerized by its beauty. Then hand it to her.

An open flower is nothing less than a message of love.

Of course, if you find a heart shaped rock in the parking lot on  the way to the restaurant, that would be cool too.

In a pinch.

Emil Guillermo/Linceblog:Tim Lincecum says he draws inspiration from his Filipino heritage.

On Friday night, the dangle was on.

The dangle?

That’s the spot where Tim Lincecum reaches back with his right hand to get leverage for his delivery of the ball to the plate.

And by his own admission, “today felt better than most.”

Lincecum dazzled the sold out SF Giants crowd with a “Timmy Day” performance (6 innings, 3-hits, No runs, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts, ERA 2.00).

He stopped the Marlins’ slugger Giancarlo Stanton cold,  striking him out twice; the most critical one being a changeup in the 5th that ended a bases-loaded rally.

Lincecum seemed to punctuate the second Stanton strike out with a little extra English on his fist pump.

“I was pretty excited about it,” Lincecum said to me  in the clubhouse. “It was a pretty emotional setting.”

Pitching with a lead also helped, thanks to a Casey McGhee grand-slam in the 2nd inning. Two more runs  came in the 5th and 7th  but the Giants had enough to stop the Marlins on this night, 6-0.

It was also another Filipino Heritage Night, and fans who bought the special ticket received a bobble-head that commemorated Lincecum’s second career no-hitter last year.

Later,  I asked Lincecum if he drew any inspiration from  these heritage nights.

“Yes, definitely,” Lincecum answered me. “I think there’s always something to be said about where you come from, and obviously, my mom is full Filipino, so that goes into it without saying. I wasn’t really focused on that today. I was focused on the task at hand…But (fans) got a cool bobble-head, and it’s on a good night.”

Emil Guillermo: Mayweather changes mind on rematch with Pacquiao in Showtime interview, says, “We fight 100 times, I’ma win 100 times, Manny Pacquiao is just not a better fighter than me.” See clip of new interview.

Floyd Mayweather is taking back the offer of a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, saying earlier statements to ESPN were true, but he’s since changed his mind.

Mayweather’s new stance was revealed in an interview with Showtime to be cablecasted this weekend.

Mayweather calls Pacquiao a “coward” and said if Pacquaio was hurt he didn’t show it in the ring.

“His right hand was fast, and he was throwing them both (left and right) strong and fast,” Mayweather said to Showtime.

Mayweather said Pacquiao’s embarrassed. “He’s a beaten fighter,” Mayweather said of the Filipino champ. “Come on this is ridiculous…I won…We fight 100 times, I’ma win 100 times. Manny Pacquiao is, he’s not a better fighter than me.”

Pacquiao still faces scrutiny over his disclosure of his shoulder injury. AP is reporting Nevada Athletic Commission executive director Bob Bennett confirmed Pacquaio filled out the form himself and understood the questions.

“It’s not just the fact he didn’t fill out the question completely, it was that he wasn’t honest and they didn’t tell us a month ago when he had the shoulder injury,” said Bennett to AP.

Pacquaio could be out 9-12 months recuperating from his injury. But he may be encumbered by legal issues resulting from the failed injury disclosure.

Mayweather may have decided it wasn’t worth toying with a rematch just yet.
